It’s September, which means that the days are becoming cooler, the trees are losing their leaves and fall is almost here! And to celebrate this new season, today I’ll be sharing with you this easy fall sign DIY so you can decorate without breaking the bank.
Since last year, I’ve started making my own wooden signs (whether for summer, Christmas, etc) using dollar store materials, and today I’ll be teaching you how I made my own wooden signs without a Cricut or SVG machine for under $8. Plus keep on reading to get 6 FREE autumn wall art printables!
In the past week, I’ve actually made a couple of signs with different sayings cause it is so much fun and cute. One’s simple and straightforward (Hello Pumpkin) while the other is much lusher and details plus it has a pumpkin spice latte!
While on the smaller sign, they can certainly make any space much more autumnal!

And if you’re wondering: hey didn’t she share a wooden sign DIY already?
The answer is I did. Thank you for remembering!
Last Christmas season I shared how to make a Yarn Tassel Christmas Tree Sign only materials from Dollarama and in this post, I’ll be using the same type of wooden frame to make our fall sign.
Also, if you recall from my farmhouse entryway transformation post, I mentioned that I had DIY’d my “It’s So Good To Be Home” sign without an SVG machine and would be sharing the how-to with you. And after a year the wooden sign DIY tutorial is here!

Easy Fall Sign DIY (plus free printables!)
prep: techniques & materials used
As you can see from the pictures, I made various signs and while I used different materials the technique used is the same.
All the materials I used in this post, I found in Dollarama (a dollar store) making this project inexpensive. So I highly recommend checking out your local dollar store for the crafting materials needed.
The wooden frame I found at Dollarama for about $3, it’s about 7 x 9 inches which makes it a good size for shelf, desk decor. You can also find the wooden frames on Amazon, 5 frames/panels for $20.*
For the marking/writing, I used permanent markers. Specifically, Sharpies* as the colour is bold however any good quality non-washable marker will do.
Like most people, I do not have a Cricut* or an SVG cutting machine (although I’d love to own one!), so the technique that I used to transfer my designs is not as precise but it is a) inexpensive b) simple.
The main part involves shading the back of the design/paper with charcoal or pencil and then placing the paper on the board and writing on it which will then transfer the design. Kind of like carbon paper.
As for the designs, these fall prints were designed by yours truly and can be found in this link. I also included them in color so they can be framed and be used as wall art! Just print them on US Letter size paper (8.5×11) and you’re ready to go.
Before we start, just a head’s up that while inexpensive and cute to make this fall sign DIY is a tad time-consuming as it can take upwards of 25 minutes but it’s worth it!
materials
- Wood Frame Plaque/panel
- The small one was 7×9 and got it at Dollarama
- These 5-set ones on Amazon are 8×10*
- White and brown paint
- Paint brushes.
- I like to use foam brushes when making big strokes, but when patching up or fixing little mistakes a smaller is one is must.
- Pencil
- Permanent markers (Sharpie brand works best)
- Get as set of 5 for $4*
- The printed sign (download the printable)
instructions
Now that you have all your materials we can get started!
First, paint the frame (ie the outer part) of the plaque brown. Make sure to get all of the borders. Let it dry.
Now that the frame part is painted, take the white paint and paint the backing. Let dry for about five minutes.
- Don’t worry if you accidentally paint the frame, this can be fixed later.
Place the printed sheet face down and with the pencil shade the back. Making sure to firmly shade in where the lettering and graphics are.
Take the paper and find where you want the words to be and tape the top of the paper to the frame to prevent it from shifting.
- You can also cut the words apart before this step so it is easier to handle/place where desired.
Take the pencil and firmly outline the letters, graphics, words. You can carefully lift the paper to see if the words are transferring.
After outlining everything, gently remove the tape and paper. Set that aside.
Using a black sharpie, or a paint marker, go over the outline of the “hey there” and then fill it in. Using an orange marker do the same for “pumpkin”.
- For this part, I like to place a paper underneath my writing hand to prevent pencil/marker smudging.
Likewise, for the little pumpkin spice latte, shade, trace and color it in. I used a grey for the whipping cream as to make it visible.
Once you are done filling all the words in, you can go back and erase or paint over smudges. At this point, you can also do likewise for any place where the white paint fell on the frame and fix those areas.
Done! You now have a cute Hello Pumpkin sign for under $8!

Thank you, Karalee. Cricut is way out of budget for me but I love cute signs, so this was a fun and creative way to get the look without the price 😅
