So it’s less than a week before Christmas! Can you believe how fast time has flown and the new year is nearly upon us too!?
A couple of weeks ago I was at the mall (my only free time) when I stumbled upon an ornament made out of wood that was so cute and creative that I thought of diy-ing it myself. I call it my phrase house ornament for it looks like a little house with a phrase in it.
I thought of posting this craft earlier this month but school got in the way (again).
Last week I finished my first semester at university and so I’m free for the next couple of weeks! I had so many papers due and tests to write that I had no time to sleep much less blog.
By the time I finished I had written about 18 pages in total, but now that I’m done I’m in need of a well-deserved break. Truth be told I’m way behind on making my Christmas gifts and so I’m trying to catch up not only on that but on blogging (can you believe it’s been 2.5 weeks since my last post?) and baking.
But their way let’s get started, shall we?
Little Phrase in House Ornament
This craft is fun, cute and easy to make as either as an ornament or for gifting. The first time I tried it took over 1/2hr but then it took about 5 minutes total. The papers I had were from back when I did card making and scrapbooking. For the ribbon, I used some scrap fabric that was too small to use but too big to throw away (use for stuffing).
Materials:
- Thick paper
- Such as cardstock or scrapbooking paper, should be able to hold it’s shaped.
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Optional: Craft scissors for decorating edges.
- Glue
- Scrap fabric or ribbon
- Fancy markers
- Stamps and ink
- Optional: Binder clips/ paperclips for holding together
Instructions
- First things first cut the paper into long strips that are 2cm wide and 28 cm long. Fold it down the middle and hole punch a hole in the middle.
- I used craft scissors to cut on edge/side.
- Measure 4 cm from the middle on both sides, fold. Then measure 5cm then fold again. There should be six sides.
- Glue together the bottom two.
- I like to use the binder clips to hold them together while the glue dries.
- Meanwhile, take the lightweight paper and cut it into 1.5cm wide by 9cm long. Using one of the stamps (Mine was Merry Christmas) stamp it unto the paper. Or using one of the fancy markers a cute saying can be written.
- One cm from the edge of the stamped paper, fold it and glue it to the sides of the house.
- For the background of my Merry Christmas ornament, I traced a tree and added a cm in the bottom and cut it out. I then glued it to the bottom.
- For the other ones I couldn’t think of anything and so I left the back blank.
- A scrap of ribbon should be 10-16cm long, thread it through the hole and knot it.
- Done! Now you can hang it up or gift it to someone you love. These can be gifted along with a plate of candy cane sugar cookies. Yum!
Step 2 |
Step 3 |
- For the other ornaments, I did different sizes/lengths and it worked out great. For the smaller ones I did: 13cm by 2cm, fold in half, then at 4cm and at 8.5cm. The phrase paper should be 7.5cm long.
- I also stamped the papers on the side with different colours. For the back other shapes can be cut out an glued to the house. I left some of them ‘backless’ for they looked minimalistic, colourful and chic (?), also because since I was short on time I couldn’t do anything fancier.
- The stamp that I used I bought at Michael’s for a very (very) good price.
What do you think? Are your ready for Noël? Do you sew, bake, or make the gifts for your family? If you have any questions, thoughts or concerns do not hesitate to comment or contact me.
Til next time

These look super cute and quite easy to create! I'll definitely keep these in mind to do as crafts with the children at work, they'd have made a great present for their parents to hang on their trees!
